Utah Bear Hunting/Pursuit Permit Application Deadline Feb 29

If you'd like to hunt bears during the spring, summer or fall seasons, the time to apply for a permit is here. Deadline to apply is Feb 29th. West Virginia Furbearer Trapping & Hunting Season Ends Soon

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds that various trapping and small game seasons are ending soon. The hunting and trapping seasons for red and gray fox, bobcat, and raccoon will end Feb. 29, 2016. The trapping seasons for coyote, otter, mink and muskrat also will end Feb. 29, 2016. Trapping season for beaver continues until March 31, 2016. Beaver trappers are reminded that it is illegal to set traps during the month of March for beaver unless those traps are in water. Trappers should be aware that it is illegal to set traps or leave traps set after noon on the last day of the respective season.  READ MORE

Spring Turkey Hunts Offered in Central Coast, Northern California Counties

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is now accepting applications for several turkey hunt opportunities in Santa Barbara and Yolo counties this spring. North Dakota Meetings to Discuss Mountain Lion Management

   North Dakota Game and Fish Department officials will host three public meetings this month to discuss the status of the state’s mountain lion population. Results of a two-phase research project and biological findings from animals harvested over the last decade show the population has steadily declined over the past several years. Researchers Discover First-Ever Malaria Parasite in Whitetail Deer

   Researchers at the University of Vermont (UVM) and the Smithsonian’s Conservation Biology Institute recently published a study on the first-ever malaria parasite known to live in a deer species. According to a press release from UVM, a malaria parasite called Plasmodium odocoilei was found in whitetail deer, and these were not isolated cases. Researchers believe the parasite is actually incredibly widespread and is estimated to be present in roughly 25 percent of all whitetail deer on the East Coast. Fortunately, the parasite is not believed to be much of a threat to humans.  READ MORE

South Carolina Coyote Workshop at Webb Wildlife Center March 23-24

Texas Taking Steps to Remove Invasive Exotic Axis Deer From Garner State Park

   Several hundred undesirable visitors to Garner State Park have been abusing this treasured Hill Country destination, leaving park officials with little choice but to take strong measures to remedy the problem. Invasive exotic axis deer are eating up a limited supply of the groceries and displacing the local inhabitants.

Wyoming Report Shows Grizzly Bear Numbers Up in 2015 Relocations

   A newly released report shows that the number of grizzly bear relocations in Wyoming in 2015 more than doubled from the previous year.

Florida Wildlife Commission Seeks Information on Anacondas in Brevard County

   Two green anacondas were found recently in Brevard County, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) wants your help in learning more about them. On Feb. 3, an 8-foot, 8-inch green anaconda was turned over to FWC officials after its capture in Brevard County. The snake was collected in a Melbourne neighborhood called Oxford Ridge.The nonnative snake was euthanized and turned over to biologists for research regarding reproductive status, overall health and gut content. Idaho Goose Hunting Opportunities Still Available

While most hunting seasons are now closed, the spring light goose season is poised to open in southeast Idaho. Beginning Saturday, February 13, the season on Blue, Ross's and Snow geese opens and runs through March 10 in Area 4. The season in Area 3 is currently open and continues through March 10. Idaho Smaller Chinook Run Expected

Fishing for spring and summer chinook will probably happen in the same places as last year if pre-season forecasts are correct, but the run size is expected to be smaller than last year, and anglers could see shorter seasons and/or lower bag limits. Idaho Fish and Game anticipates 59,000 chinook bound for Idaho hatcheries to cross Lower Granite Dam about 25 miles downstream from Lewiston. Lower Granite is the last dam fish cross before reaching Idaho, and hatchery chinook with clipped adipose fins are salmon anglers can harvest.
