  While taking his 11-year-old brother on his very first elk hunt, Russel Ferster, 24, and Lane Ferster were faced with an angry black bear. Russel had only a split second to react to defend himself and his little brother from a potential fatal mauling. ODFW and Oregon State Police remind hunters with a disabilities permit about bag limit changes in Wilson, Scappoose and Saddle Mt Units for upcoming general and controlled Coast Elk seasons.Due to declining elk populations, these units no longer have an expanded bag limit, where hunters with a disabilities permit may take an antlerless elk. The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) Commission voted to allow shed antler hunting on state owned lands at their November meeting in Brandon last week.   A possible world record whitetail deer was killed in Summer County, Tennessee on Monday. West Virginia's traditional buck firearms season begins Monday, Nov. 21, 2016. The buck firearms season has opened the Monday before Thanksgiving every year since 1965. The timing of the season is a balance of hunting during some of the rut (mating season) while still allowing for the annual renewal of the deer herd.   An elk hunter in Bend, Oregon, was impaled by the antler of an elk as he dragged it back to camp behind an ATV.  Crook County law enforcement and medics from Crook County Fire and Rescue received calls of an injured hunter in the Maury Mountains.   The Arizona Game and Fish Department reminds all active duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed in Arizona that they, and their spouses, may purchase resident hunting and fishing licenses.
