Illinois Hunters Harvest Over 144,000 Deer During 2016-17 Seasons

Illinois deer hunting  Hunters in Illinois harvested a preliminary total of 144,150 deer during all 2016-17 seasons, which concluded Jan. 15. The total preliminary deer harvest for all seasons compares with a total harvest for all seasons of 155,229 in 2015-16.  During this year’s deer seasons, hunters took 44 percent does and 56 percent males. Apply for Montana 2017 Elk and Deer Permits by March 15 - Note Changes for Region One

Montana hunters are reminded that the deadline for applying for bull and antlerless elk and mule deer buck permits is March 15.  The deer and elk permit application packet is available at FWP license providers and online at FWP’s website. Oregon Pets Attacked by Cougars in La Pine

Oregon cougars attacking pets  ODFW are asking La Pine area residents to be aware of cougars causing public safety issues in and around town. USDA Wildlife Services and ODFW are currently tracking at least one cougar after its sighting at Corner Store in La Pine Tuesday, Jan 24th. Two pets (one dog and one cat) and 12 chickens have been killed by cougars in the area recently. ;On Saturday, an additional pet dog was attacked by a cougar. Mississippi Angler Catches New State and World Record Longnose Gar   On Saturday, September 10, Mississippi angler, Don Henson of Southaven, went fishing at the Sardis Lake spillway. Connecticut Bobcat Attack Tested Positive for Rabies  The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) recently announced that the bobcat in the Jan 17 incident tested positive for rabies. Three women were taken to an area medical facility for treatment after a bobcat jumped on one of them in a greenhouse on Waterhole Rd in Colchester Jan 17th. Idaho Pronghorn Deaths Blamed on Japanese Yew   Just two weeks ago, a group of eight Idaho elk died in the Boise foothills after feeding on Japanese yew plants. This week, a herd of 50 pronghorn antelope have been found dead in the town of Payette, victims of the same toxic shrub. The pronghorn were reported to Fish and Game staff early Tuesday afternoon, January 17th; conservation officers located the 50 animals in one large scattered group later that day.
