Study Shows Asian Carp In the Great Lakes Could Devastate Native Fish

by TBC Press on 01/11/16

Study Shows Asian Carp In the Great Lakes Could Devastate Native Fish    Asian carp have yet to establish a presence in the Great Lakes, but scientists have already begun researching the possible effects of an invasion by the non-native species.

In a study recently published in the journal Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the University of Michigan state that if Asian carp get into Lake Erie, the fish could eventually account for about a third of the total weight of fish in the lake. This means that plenty of native fish, such as the lakes prized walleye and rainbow trout, will see their populations cut significantly.  READ MORE

California Confirms New Wolf OR-25 Entered From Oregon

by TBC Press on 01/11/16

California Confirms New Wolf OR-25 Entered From Oregon   Officials with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) confirmed recently that another gray wolf has entered California from Oregon last month.  According to the department, the wolf is a three-year-old male named OR-25 with dark fur. Officials say that the wolf has most recently been spotted in Modoc County and is likely following basic dispersal behavior. Young male wolves like to wander, especially if there are no available females nearby. That same reason was why OR-7, the first gray wolf to enter California in about 100 years, across the state border in 2011. OR-7 has since returned to Oregon to start its own pack, but experts are unsure if OR-25 will do the same, especially since there is now a wolf pack in California. READ MORE

Idaho Hunter Shoots Mountain Lion with Strange Deformity-Photo

by TBC Press on 01/11/16

Idaho Hunter Shoots Mountain Lion with Strange Deformity   In case you are unsure what you are looking at, teeth seem to be growing out of the side of this mountain lions head. According to the Idaho State Journal, this yearling cougar was harvested by a hunter near Weston, Idaho last week and photos were sent to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game for identification. The problem is, biologists are just as confused over what exactly caused the deformity. It has all of us scratching our heads, wildlife biologist Zach Lockyer told the Journal. Its a bizarre situation and a bizarre photo.

They had never seen anything like it, but they do have a few theories. The first is that the teeth could be the result of a rare rumor called a teratoma, which can contain hair, bones, or teeth. In extreme situations, teratomas have even been reported to contain complex structures such as eyes or limbs. Teratomas are present from birth.  READ MORE

Fifty Minnesota Anglers Stranded on Lake Last Month after Ice Separated

by TBC Press on 01/11/16

Warm temperatures and high winds mean that ice fishermen should be very cautious. At least 50 anglers were stranded on Minnesota’s Upper Red Lake last month after the ice cracked and was blown away from shore by strong winds. According to the Beltrami County Sheriffs Office, the anglers were able to find a path back to shore with the assistance of rescue personnel, who also retrieved the vehicles and belongings left behind on the floating ice.

Now I dont think I will ever go early-ice ice fishing again, Chris Hachey, one of the anglers involved, told the Duluth News Tribune. We had no idea there was any open water out there.  READ MORE

Utah 2016 Black Bear Rules Approved

by TBC Press on 01/11/16

A new black bear strategy, started in Utah in 2015, did exactly what wildlife managers hoped it would: it led to government agencies taking fewer bears and hunters taking more. Members of the Utah Wildlife Board approved a similar bear hunting strategy for the new year. The strategy splits Utah's bear hunt into six seasons. The seasons are held at various times in the spring, summer and fall. Each of the six seasons is unique. For example, during some seasons, hunters are allowed to hunt bears with trained hunting dogs that track and tree bears. During other hunts, hounds are not allowed. READ MORE

Duck Hunting Tragedy Reminds Hunters About Importance of Water Safety

by TBC Press on 01/08/16
