New York Seeks Landowners to Assist with Wild Turkey Research

by TBC Press on 12/21/15

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the kickoff of the fourth year of a research project on wild turkey survival rates to help improve the management of this popular game bird.

DEC and its partners have worked hard over the past three years to better understand why wild turkey populations have changed dramatically in New York," Acting Commissioner Seggos said. This project will provide valuable information on turkey survival and harvest and will help evaluate the changes to fall hunting seasons implemented in 2016. I encourage landowners that have wild turkey on their property this winter to consider participating in this study. READ MORE

New York Seeks Comments on Draft for Deer Damage Management

by TBC Press on 12/21/15

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the availability of a draft Environmental Assessment (EA) entitled White-tailed Deer Damage Management in New York. The EA, prepared by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services' (WS) New York Office, describes the need to manage white-tailed deer to reduce and prevent damage associated with these animals in New York; discusses potential issues associated with managing damage caused by deer; and the environmental consequences of alternatives for WS involvement in deer damage management throughout New York State.

The proposed action (preferred alternative) is to implement an integrated approach using a variety of methods to reduce deer damage. DEC issues permits to landowners, municipalities and resource management agencies to address deer damage and as a cooperating agency on this EA, DEC is encouraging the public to review and provide comments on it. Utah Chukar Hunting Gets Better in Winter

by TBC Press on 12/21/15

Falling snow is good news for chukar hunters. Once snow starts to fall, chukars — which roam over a larger area during the warmer months — concentrate in smaller areas. That makes it easier to find the birds.

Chukar partridge also they live in some of Utah's driest areas. That's another reason why they're a great bird to hunt in the winter. You won't have to worry as much about getting your vehicle stuck in snow, or hiking through deep snow, like you might while participating in other hunts. Colder weather also makes hiking less strenuous.  READ MORE

More Than 31,000 Deer Harvested During Maryland Firearm Season

by TBC Press on 12/18/15

Maryland hunters reported taking 31,390 deer during the popular two-week deer firearm season. Despite mild weather across the state, rain on key hunting days resulted in an eight percent decline in harvest compared to last season. More than 3,200 deer were taken on the Sunday hunting days.

Scattered rain across the state on opening weekend, combined with warm weather throughout the season, made for challenging hunting conditions this year, Wildlife and Heritage Service Director Paul Peditto said. With Sunday hunting available in most counties, hunters had more opportunities to adapt to these conditions and achieve the harvest necessary to meet our deer management objectives. READ MORE

Kentucky DFW Confirms New State Record Elk

by TBC Press on 12/18/15

It is official. A massive bull elk taken in Knott County, Kentucky during the October rifle season opener is now the largest in the state’s history. According to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, David Giles bagged an elk that had an astounding green score of 408 and 3/8 inches gross. After a 60-day drying period, the elk’s final score on the Boone & Crockett Club scale was 377 5/8.

Giles, a 64-year-old banker from Lexington, said it was his first elk in 15 years of entering the state’s annual elk lottery. Every year the state receives tens of thousands of applications for the elk hunt, but less than 1,000 permits are issued. This year Giles happened to be one of the lucky ones. READ MORE

Anglers and Hunters Please Watch The Ice

by TBC Press on 12/18/15

Hunters and Anglers PLEASE watch the ice -- Case in point: Two Bismarck anglers were recently rescued from a Kidder County lake, after they could not get back to shore because the ice had heaved and melted away from the shoreline.

This was a serious situation where everything turned out OK, said Game and Fish enforcement chief Robert Timian, and it is also a critical warning that ice conditions can vary from lake to lake, and can even change during the day, depending on the weather. Anglers and hunters need to use extreme caution before venturing out on the ice right now.  READ MORE
