Kansas Public Meeting on Deer & Waterfowl Hunting Regulations Jan 7

The Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism Commission will conduct a public meeting in Manhattan at the K-State Alumni Center, 1720 Anderson Ave. on Jan. 7, 2016. The afternoon session of the meeting will begin at 1 p.m. and recess at 5 p.m. The evening session will convene at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited to attend both sessions and time is set aside at the beginning of each for discussion of non-agenda items.

The afternoon session will begin with Secretary Robin Jennison’s report on the agency and state fiscal status and a review of the 2016 Kansas legislative session. Commissioners will then draw seven Commission Big Game Permits to be issued to eligible conservation organizations. The permits, which may include no more than one elk, one antelope or seven deer, can then be sold by the organizations, which must be non-profit, based or operating in Kansas and actively promoting wildlife conservation and the hunting and fishing heritage. Once the permit is sold, the organization keeps 15 percent of the sale price and sends 85 percent back to the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism (KDWPT). READ MORE

Minnesota Pheasant Summit Action Plan

Minnesota DNR and its partners have produced a Pheasant Summit Action Plan, which establishes an aggressive habitat-based set of short- and long-term steps to increase and improve grassland habitat for pheasants and other wildlife, and opportunities for hunting. Also, the state received a $1.67 million, three-year federal grant from the Natural Resources Conservation Service to fund Minnesota’s Walk-In Access (WIA) program to provide public hunting access to private land and to help fund landowner efforts to enhance the habitat on the WIA acres. Montana Seeks Comments on 2016-17 Hunting Season Proposals

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks will hold two meetings in southeastern Montana in January to gather comments on proposed hunting seasons and rules for the next two years. Every two years FWP considers changes to all hunting seasons, proposes changes from the previous biennium and encourages public comment before the FWP commission makes its final decisions in February. Meetings and hearings are held in every region of the state to listen to comments. FWP and its commissioners also will accept written, online or emailed comments through Jan. 22. READ MORE

Montana Bowhunting Class in Billings Jan 29-31

The first 2016 Montana bowhunter education class in Yellowstone County is scheduled for Jan. 29-31 at the Billings Rod and Gun Club. Anyone who hunts during an archery-only season in Montana is required to either complete a Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks bowhunter education class or show proof that they have hunted with a bow and arrows in the past. They also must purchase a bow-and-arrow license in addition to the hunting licenses and tags for each species. READ MORE

New Hampshire Anglers Have New Lead Law Taking Effect June 1st

A new law goes into effect in New Hampshire on June 1, 2016, banning the sale and freshwater use of lead fishing sinkers and jigs (lead-weighted hooks) weighing one ounce or less. The new law does not apply to lead core line, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, spoons, poppers, plugs or flies. State law already prohibits the use of certain size lead sinkers and jigs in all fresh waters of New Hampshire. The new ban will prohibit the use and sale of lead sinkers and jigs weighing 1 ounce or less, regardless of length. READ MORE

New Jersey Outdoors Sports Show/Deer Classic January 7-10

The NJDEP Division of Fish and Wildlife's Garden State Deer Classic is slated for January 7 - 10, 2016, as part of the Garden State Outdoor Sports Show taking place at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison, NJ. The show provides an opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to view products, book trips and purchase fishing, hunting and other outdoor recreation equipment from hundreds of vendors. Rhode Island Stocks Waters With Trout For Winter Fishing

Just in time for the winter fishing season, the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) is stocking ponds and rivers across Rhode Island with some 1,400 brown and brook trout.

"We hope families will take time to venture outdoors and experience the thrill of reeling in a trout at one of these prime fishing locations," said DEM Director Janet Coit. California SHARE Access Permit Application Deadlines In Jan for Multiple Hunting Opportunities

California Anglers Report Deadline for Harvest Report Cards Jan 31

   Online Harvest Reporting Begins for Abalone, Steelhead, Sturgeon and North Coast Salmon Report Cards. Anglers who were issued report cards for any of these species and also abalone divers must report their harvest or effort by Jan. 31, 2016. Canada Ice Fishing Off to Hot Start in Manitoba After Weather Delays

   It took a while, but the recent cold snap to hit southern Manitoba has finally made it possible for avid winter anglers to safely get out onto the ice. Its Safe to fish on Lake Winnipeg, Red River near Selkirk. However ice still too thin to drive on in some spots. Warm weather in November and early December meant premier fishing spots, like Lake Winnipeg and the Red River, stayed open later into the season than usual. READ MORE

Georgia Privately Owned Field Available to Late Season Dove Hunters Through Jan 9

   Hunters visiting Tattnall County are able to take advantage of the late dove season and hunt on a private field thanks to the Voluntary Public Access program. This field is 67 acres of planted sorghum and sunflowers and will be open each Saturday through Jan. 9, 2016. Hunters should sign-in at kiosk located at field (7498 Kennedy Bridge Road, Manassas), and park in designated areas. It is advisable to scout ahead of time, as doves get more unpredictable this time of year. READ MORE

Georgia BOW Workshop Feb 19-21 at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge

   The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman workshop series provides a practical introduction to a wide variety of outdoor recreational skills and activities. One of these workshops, hosted by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, is scheduled to take place Feb. 19-21 at the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge.  

This new BOW workshop will visit the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, the “Land of the Trembling Earth,” for a unique opportunity to fish, boat, learn advanced hunter education skills while being introduced to the habitat and resource management of the natural, historical and cultural resources of one of Georgia’s seven natural wonders. Maryland Firearm Deer Season Reopens January 8

   The winter portion of the firearm deer season opens on Jan. 8 in Deer Management Region B. The season remains closed in Region A. Hunters who possess a valid Maryland hunting license or are exempt from license requirements may use firearms to harvest sika and white-tailed deer during this time.

The season is open on Jan. 8 and 9 in all Region B counties, and on Jan. 10 on private lands only in Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, St. Mary’s, Washington (Zone 1) and Worcester counties. READ MORE

West Virginia's Trout Stocking & Changes Begin Jan 4

   The 2016 trout stocking season that begins Monday, Jan. 4, will see several changes, according to Bret Preston, assistant chief for the Division of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Section.

Seven streams and one pond have been removed from the 2016 trout stocking schedule. These streams are either too small, have very limited angler access, few stocking locations, poor trout habitat, or a combination of these characteristics. These streams include READ MORE

Colorado Byers Canyon Shooting Range Closing for Season Jan 4

   Colorado Parks and Wildlife alerts shooting enthusiasts of the Byers Canyon Shooting Range in Hot Sulphur Springs seasonal closure effective Jan. 4, 2016.  CPW officials in Hot Sulphur Springs close the popular range each year to protect wildlife from human-caused stress during the coldest time of the year.  The range will remain closed until wintering big game migrates to summer range, usually mid to late April.
