Mississippi River Flooding May Cause Closures

by TBC Press on 12/29/15

As a result of the recent severe weather and heavy rains that we have experienced in the past few days, the Mississippi River is beginning to rise at a rate in excess of that experienced during the floods of 2008-2009.  The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) would like to remind everyone of several important items.

As waters rise, many deer and other wildlife may be displaced from their normal habitat.  As these animals move onto adjacent lands, this will place additional pressure on food sources. Supplemental feeding is not recommended in areas that will be inundated with floodwater. READ MORE

DEC will accept written public comment on the proposed rule changes through February 8, 2016.

DEC is proposing to amend the regulations found within Title 6 of the New York Codes, Rules and Regulations (6 NYCRR section 180.3) to allow the use of certain air-powered firearms for hunting big game. Air-powered rifles that meet certain specifications, termed "big bore air rifles," have adequate downrange energy to effectively harvest New York big game species. In 2010, DEC amended these regulations to allow the use of air-powered firearms for hunting small game. READ MORE

US Fish and Wildlife Service Lists 2 lion Subspecies Under Endangered Species Act

by TBC Press on 12/28/15

In response to the dramatic decline of lion populations in the wild, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) today announced it will list two lion subspecies under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). Panthera leo leo, located in India and western and central Africa, will be listed as endangered, and Panthera leo melanochaita, located in eastern and southern Africa, will be listed as threatened.

Concurrent with this listing rule, to protect lions and other foreign and domestic wildlife from criminal activity, Service Director Dan Ashe also issued a Director’s Order to strengthen enforcement of wildlife permitting requirements. The order, which aligns with President Obama’s National Strategy for Combating Wildlife Trafficking, will ensure that violators of wildlife laws are not subsequently granted permits for future wildlife-related activities, including the import of sport-hunted trophies.
