West Virginia 2015 Governor's One Shot Deer Hunt Donated $50,000 To Food Bank

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, members of the Governor's One Shot Committee and several state senators and delegates recently presented a check to the Mountaineer Food Bank, representing $50,000 raised during the ninth annual Governor's One Shot Deer Hunt, held Oct. 23-25, 2015, at Stonewall Resort State Park. Brig. Gen. Chuck Yeager, USAF, Ret., was the featured guest at the event.  READ MORE

Arizona Hunter May Have Archery World Record Desert Bighorn Ram

   Getting a bighorn tag is rare enough, but harvesting this old bighorn monarch was the experience of a lifetime for one avid hunter. Tony Loop already holds Arizona’s state record for bow-harvested desert bighorn, but a massive ram taken late last year may very well net him the archery world record.

At this year’s Sheep Show, hosted by the Wild Sheep Foundation, Loop’s most recent desert bighorn measured an eye-popping 186 and 4/8 inches on the Pope and Young Club scoring system. The club’s current world record for that species belongs to a 179 and 3/8-inch animal taken by Brian Benyo on Mexico’s Tiburón Island three years ago.  READ MORE

High Water Prompts Temporary Closures in 3 South Florida WMAs

Due to recent rainfall, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has temporarily closed several activities and roads in Everglades and Francis S. Taylor, Holey Land and Rotenberger Wildlife Management Areas (WMA).

Access is prohibited from the L-35B levee north to the east-west airboat trail. However, the portion of Conservation Area 3A South that is east of the Miami Canal between Interstate 75 and the L-67A levee remains open. Also, pedestrian access (via Tamiami Trail/U.S. 41 only) is still open to the L-28, L67A, L67C and L29 levees. The closures apply to vehicles, airboats, all-terrain vehicles and other public access and will remain in effect until further notice to ensure public safety and resources conservation.  READ MORE

Florida Hunter Safety Internet Course in Gulf County Feb 20

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is offering a free hunter safety Internet-completion course in Gulf County Feb. 20 at Gulf Correctional Institution, 500 Ike Steele Road, Wewahitchka. Those interested in attending the course can register online and obtain information about future hunter safety classes at MyFWC.com/HunterSafety or by calling the FWC’s regional office in Panama City at 850-265-3676.  READ MORE

Kansas Prime Land Access for Spring Turkey Through Special Hunt

   Its hard to beat hunting turkeys during the spring season in Kansas. Weather has warmed up, birds are active and on the move, and its the start of a new hunting season. But what if there was a way to top this? There is. Try adding special access to quality lands not normally open to hunting, and it wouldnt cost you a penny. If you think this sounds like a pipe dream, chances are, you are not familiar with the Kansas Special Hunts. The Program provides access to public and private lands that are not open to unrestricted public access. Michigan Offers New Camping Options at Wilderness State Park

   The Michigan Department of Natural Resources hopes campers are excited about the the summer opening of a new campground at Wilderness State Park in Emmet County. The campground will open to the public Thursday, June 23, and reservations (which can be make up to six months in advance) will be accepted starting Thursday, Feb. 4, at 8 a.m. The new campground will boast spectacular views of Lake Michigan. It offers two options for camping, including a full hook-up campground and a tent-only rustic campground.  READ MORE

Virginia Trappers Association Annual Fur Sale, Augusta Expoin Fishersville, Virginia Saturday, March 12. VTA Holds an annual fur auction to provide a market for fur. which includes Coyote, Red Fox, Gray Fox, Bobcat, Raccoon, Opossum, Beaver and more. Only licensed fur buyers can purchase raw or finished fur. The beginning of an auctioning round will be preceded by a five minute warning whistle. The first round of auctioning will begin at 8:30 am. All selling begins on the rear row and progresses from the buyers’ left to right and rear to front. Once a row of tables has been sold and cleared then a VTA worker will direct the appropriate sellers to exhibit their fur on that row of tables. READ MORE

West Virginia Trappers Association Fur Auction, Gilmer County Recreation Center Glenville, WV March 4-6. WVTA Holds an annual fur auction to provide a market for fur which includes Coyote, Red Fox, Gray Fox, Bobcat, Raccoon, Opossum, Beaver and more. Only West Virginia licensed fur buyers can purchase raw or finished fur. Finishedf Fur, roots and horn items are consigned Friday and Saturday, 9am to 6pm. Dealer's lots are graded at the end of each day. Upon arrival at the fur auction, the first thing is to complete a consignment sheet. The consignment secretary will look up your name in the WVTA database to check your membership, record your name, mailing address and hunting license number.  READ MORE

Wisconsin Hunter Bags New State Record Archery Buck

   The Wisconsin Buck & Bear Club, the state’s official big game record keepers, announced that the Badger State had a new archery whitetail record after John Kassera harvested a massive buck on his property in La Crosse County. The deer, which was harvested last November, was panel measured recently and scored an impressive 193 and 4/8 inches net. The total gross score of the buck was 201 and 5/8 inches.

At approximately 2:55 pm on Thursday November 5, 2015 a huge buck was cruising a steep hillside in a region commonly referred to as The Driftless Area in West Central Wisconsin. Illinois Adds More Access and Spring Turkey Hunting Opportunities

The Illinois Recreational Access Program (IRAP) has added first-time adult turkey hunting to its growing list of public access activities. A first-time adult hunter includes anyone who hasn’t hunted turkey in the past five years.  In addition, the IDNR has changed the age restrictions for youth turkey hunting to 17 years and younger.  This will allow IRAP to permit more young turkey hunters on youth turkey hunting sites. Iowa Proposed Waterfowl Seasons and Zones

Waterfowl hunters have the opportunity to comment on proposed 2016 Iowa waterfowl seasons that were approved during the Jan. 20 meeting of the Natural Resource Commission of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The Commission also approved for public comment a proposal to change the waterfowl hunting zone boundaries for the 2017-2021 hunting seasons.  READ MORE

Angler Lands New North Carolina State Record White Marlin

   North Carolina has a new state record for white marlin, and it goes to a visiting angler from Ashburn, Virginia. The state Division of Marine Fisheries announced last week that Neil Manning caught a 138-pound white marlin while fishing off Hatteras late last year. The large fish measured 85 inches from the tip of the lower jaw to the fork of its tail. It also measured 37 inches in girth. According to Captain Kenny Koci of Fin Again Sportfishing, the anglers originally thought it was just a very small blue marlin. READ MORE

Texas Proposing Changes to Bass & Other Fishing Regulations & Limits

Fisheries staff with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are considering proposals to adjust bass and catfish fishing regulations in specific waters and areas, move saugeye under walleye harvest regulations, and clarify length limits on black drum and amberjack and rules prohibiting snagging of fish with pole-and-line. Resident and nonresident youth hunters 15 years of age and under may harvest the allowed daily bag limit of ducks (see regulations), and other waterfowl, including Atlantic brant, coots, mergansers, gallinules, moorhens, light geese, 2 Canada geese in the Atlantic Population Zone, 5 Canada geese in the Southern James Bay Population and Resident Population zones, 1 tundra swan (if the youth possesses a tundra swan permit) on the designated youth days.  READ MORE

Wisconsin Sturgeon Spearers Will Face Some Challenges When Season Opens Feb 13

When the 2016 sturgeon spearing season opens on the Lake Winnebago system Feb. 13, spearers won't have an easy time pursuing their quarry.
Last year's cold temperatures but clear waters have been replaced this year by a later-than-usual freeze and the most challenging water clarity conditions since 2006, said Ryan Koenigs, senior fisheries biologist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. However, spearers who persevere ultimately will have more opportunities for big fish thanks to a healthy sturgeon population and increased harvest caps for adult females. READ MORE
