Tennessee Youth Squirrel Hunt at Chuck Swan WMA Feb 20

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will host a youth squirrel hunt on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Chuck Swan Wildlife Management Area in Union County. The hunt is for children ages 6 to 16.  Hunters ages 13-16 must possess appropriate hunting licenses and youth ages 10 thru 16 must have successfully completed a hunter education class or possess an Apprentice Hunting License (Type 012).  Hunters will be placed in groups with a guide, a dog, and a dog handler.  For safety, all guns used during the hunt will be provided by TWRA and will be carried by the guides.  Youth hunters will take turns shooting with a shotgun or rimfire rifle. A blaze orange hat is also recommended for each hunter.  READ MORE

Texas Confirms New Case of CWD at Captive Deer Release Site

A 3 1/2-year-old captive raised white-tailed buck harvested in early January by a hunter from a release site on a ranch in Medina and Uvalde counties has been confirmed positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD). The deer’s origin has been identified as an onsite deer breeding facility and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) are conducting an epidemiological investigation.  READ MORE

Wisconsin 1st State to Legalize Blaze Pink

   Move over blaze orange, you just got competition. On Thursday, Wisconsin governor Scott Walker signed into law Assembly Bill 291, which would allow state hunters to wear blaze pink in place of the traditional orange garb. The bill, which was widely supported by hunters in the state, passed through both houses of the Legislature on bipartisan votes and makes Wisconsin the first state in the country to legalize fluorescent pink clothing as an alternative in satisfying the visibility requirement.Wisconsin law requires hunters to have at least half of all clothing above the waist be either blaze orange, or pink, while hunting.  READ MORE

Alabama Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop March 4-6

Registration is underway for the next Alabama Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop March 4-6, 2016. During the three-day workshop, which is for women ages 18 and older, participants can learn to shoot different types of firearms as well as get exposure to fishing, hunting, archery, outdoor cooking and much more.  The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) sponsors the workshop, which takes place at the 4-H Center near Columbiana, Alabama, in Shelby County.  READ MORE

Meet Arizona's El Jefe, The Only Jaguar Known to Exist in The USA-- SEE Video

   Hikers beware, there are more than just cougars in the mountains outside of Tucson, Arizona. In the wilderness of the Santa Rita Mountains, there lives, what is believed to be the only wild jaguar in the United States. Researchers recently released a compilation of trail camera footage that is the first to be seen by the public. 

“These glimpses into his behavior offer the keys to unlocking the mysteries of these cryptic cats” said Aletris Neils, executive director of Conservation CATalyst, the organization which released the video. “We are able to determine he is an adult male jaguar, currently in prime condition. Two Wild Iowa Deer Test Positive for CWD in Allamakee County

Nebraska Spring Turkey Hunting Permits Available Through May 31

The 2016 Nebraska spring turkey hunting permits for Merriam’s & Rios are now available through May 31. Apply/buy online . A spring turkey permit, as well as a spring youth turkey permit, allows a hunter to take turkeys with bow and arrow in the archery season and a shotgun in the shotgun season. Three Positives for CWD Found in Recent Testing of Nebraska Deer

The presence of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in Nebraska deer has spread eastward, according to findings by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. The Commission conducted a CWD sampling operation in its Northeast District deer check stations during the 2015 November firearm deer season. Three samples tested positive for CWD. Those samples were taken from deer harvested in Boone, Nance and Harlan counties. The deer taken in Harlan County, which is in south-central Nebraska, had been taken to a northeastern Nebraska check station, so it was included in the testing.  READ MORE

New York White Deer Herd Suffers Dramatic Decline

   The effort to preserve the largest known herd of white deer in North America took a blow this week when an aerial census revealed that the herd had lost over half its numbers since 2008. For decades, the white deer herd has lived within the borders of the Seneca Army Depot in Seneca County, New York. Sheltered behind the fences of the abandoned depot, the herd is nonetheless threatened by predators, harsh winters, and the looming prospect of development on the 7,000 acres of depot land offered up for bidding.  READ MORE

South Carolina DNR Express Services Now Available at State Farmers Market

The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officially opened a regional Midlands office at the State Farmers Market on Jan. 29, 2016. The office is located at 321 Little Brooke Lane in West Columbia in the Market Pavilion. The public will be able to purchase hunting and fishing licenses, permits and tags, as well as renew watercraft registrations and obtain duplicate decals and registration cards. Most of these transactions take three to five minutes, making this an express office. Licenses and all boating transactions will still be available at the DNR headquarters at the Dennis Building at 1000 Assembly Street in Columbia.  READ MORE

Tennessee Permit Application Available Feb 8 for Free Light Goose Conservation Season

Sportsmen are reminded that a free permit is now required to participate in the 2016 Light Goose Conservation season which will be held Feb. 14-March 10. The application for the free permit will be available on the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency’s website on Monday, Feb. 8. The Light Goose Conservation season is for Blue, Snow and Ross’s geese. The following provisions apply during the Light Goose Season only which are unplugged shotguns and electronic calls. Texas Proposing Changes to Deer Hunting Regulations for 2016-17

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is considering expanding white-tailed deer hunting into 14 counties across the western Panhandle, and creating additional deer hunting opportunities in East Texas. The recommendations are among a slate of proposed deer hunting regulation changes for 2016-17.
