Illinois Youth Hunters Register Now for Controlled Pheasant Hunt & Wingshooting Clinic

   Young hunters between the ages of 10-15 can apply now for the Pere Marquette Youth Wingshooting Clinic and Pheasant Hunt scheduled for Saturday, March 5, 2016 at Pere Marquette State Park in Jersey Co. 

The Pere Marquette youth clinic and hunt have been popular early spring additions to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources’ Wingshooting and Youth Pheasant Hunt programs. Youth hunters on March 5 at Pere Marquette will participate in a wingshooting clinic during the morning and a pheasant hunt in the afternoon. READ MORE

Kansas Trapping and Predator Calling Workshop Jan 9

  Tuttle Creek State Park will host a Kansas trapping and predator calling workshop on January 9, 2016. The class will be held from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the state park office, 5800 A River Pond Rd, Manhattan. There is no cost or preregistration required to attend.


The class is designed for trappers and hunters of all ages and skill levels, from beginners to seasoned hunters. Instructors will introduce the sport to those new to trapping and calling as well as provide some brush-up skill for those with experience. READ MORE

Kansas Whitetail Antlerless-Only Season Opens Jan 1

   KS deer hunters with unfilled 2015 deer permits have one more chance to put venison in the freezer this January. All unfilled deer permits are valid; however unit restrictions listed on the permits are still in effect. Those who didn’t purchase a permit in 2015 or may have already filled a permit, can purchase whitetail antlerless-only permits valid for the January seasons. Whitetail antlerless permits can be purchased over the counter by anyone during the extended season.

Any unfilled either-sex permit converts to a white-tailed antlerless only permit in January, and hunters may purchase up to five additional whitetail antlerless-only permits. READ MORE

Minnesota Extends Comment Period on Elk Management Plan To Jan 22

   The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has extended the deadline for comment on a new elk management plan from Sunday, Dec. 27, to Friday, Jan. 22, to give people more time to weigh in. The draft elk management plan for 2016-2020 addresses elk population goals, elk-landowner conflicts and opportunities to hunt and view elk in northwestern Minnesota where three herds totaling an estimated 130 animals roam. Missouri Seeks Christmas Trees for Fish Habitat

New Mexico Closes Monastery Lake Due to Unsafe Ice Conditions

   Monastery Lake near Pecos has been closed to fishing until further notice due to unsafe ice conditions. Ice fishing is not allowed at the lake leased by the department from nearby Benedictine monastery for public fishing. A thin layer of ice has formed on the lake prompting the closure.

“When there are sufficient open areas of water available to allow fishing from the bank we’ll reopen it,” said Mike Sloane, chief of fisheries for the Department of Game and Fish. READ MORE

Washington Extending Sport Crabbing Season in Hood Canal & Admiralty Inlet Till Feb 28

   Washington State shellfish managers are extending the sport crabbing season in Hood Canal (Marine Area 12) and a portion of Admiralty Inlet (Marine Area 9) until Feb. 28. All other Puget Sound marine areas will close at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, as scheduled.

The only portion of Admiralty Inlet that will remain open until Feb. 28 is the area north of the Hood Canal Bridge to the Foulweather Bluff to Olele Point line. The rest of Marine Area 9 will close Dec. 31, along with most other areas of Puget Sound. Those areas are scheduled to reopen next summer.

The department is extending the sport crab fishery in Hood Canal and a portion of Admiralty Inlet because there are plenty of crabs remaining in those areas, said Rich Childers, shellfish policy lead for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). READ MORE

   Wyoming application opens online Jan 4, 016 for elk, deer, antelope, moose, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, spring turkey and Super Tag raffle, 8:00am. WHAT’S NEW FOR 2016 - Wild bison beginning application date changed to February 1. Full price leftover licenses go on sale July 6 and  reduced price leftover licenses go on sale July 13. READ MORE

Deadline Jan 15 to Apply for Arkansas Spring Turkey Permit Hunt

   Arkansas hunters may now apply for limited permits on several Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife management areas for the 2016 turkey season. Applications will only be processed from Dec. 15, 2015 until Jan. 15, 2016. Applicants will be notified of their application status in late February. Permit winners must pay a processing fee of $10. Florida Fishing for Amberjack & Triggerfish Reopens Jan 1

   The recreational harvest of greater amberjack and gray triggerfish will reopen to harvest in Gulf state and federal waters Jan. 1 and the greater amberjack size limit will change from 30 inches to 34 inches fork length in Gulf state and federal waters Jan. 4.

Recent stock assessments have indicated that greater amberjack and gray triggerfish in the Gulf of Mexico are overfished, which means there are not enough fish for these populations to remain sustainable. READ MORE

Florida Seasonal Grouper Fishing Closes Jan 1

   Several species of grouper will close to recreational and commercial harvest starting Jan. 1 in Florida state waters of the Atlantic, including Monroe County. This seasonal closure includes gag, black, red, yellowmouth, yellowfin and tiger grouper; scamp; red hind; rock hind; coney; and graysby. State waters in the Atlantic are from shore out to 3 nautical miles. READ MORE

Iowa’s Late Muzzleloader Deer Season Open Through Jan 10

   The final stretch for Iowa hunters to pursue Iowa’s world class deer began Monday with the start of the late muzzleloader season and the re-opening of the popular archery season. Both seasons close Jan. 10.

Hunters with a late muzzleloader license may use a bow, muzzleloader, handgun and Iowa residents may also use a crossbow. Hunters may not use a shotgun or centerfire rifles during late muzzleloader season and party hunting is not allowed. READ MORE

Hunters prohibited from bringing harvested deer & elk from CWD-positive states into Kentucky

   A disease fatal to deer and elk now exists in 23 states. Kentucky is not one of them – and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources hopes to keep it that way.

Hunters traveling to other states for the holidays should know the law before bringing a harvested deer or elk back to Kentucky. Violations can trigger a fine and potential confiscation of the animal and hunting equipment used to take it. READ MORE

Still Time to Enter the Michigan Wetland Wonders Challenge

   The Department of Natural Resources reminds hunters to finish gathering their punches for the Consumers Energy-sponsored Wetland Wonders Challenge during the Zone 3 waterfowl hunting weekend Dec. 26 and 27. The Harsens Island, Shiawassee River and Fennville Farm managed waterfowl hunt areas will have staff members available to validate punch cards both days. The contest runs until Jan. 31, 2016. North Carolina Offers $100 Reward for Tagged Fish

   The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is offering Lake Norman anglers who catch a tagged hybrid striped bass a $100 reward if they report their catch. In order to receive the reward, anglers must retain the tag. Anglers who catch a hybrid striped bass with an orange tag will need to remove and keep all tags and provide the following information to Corey Oakley, the Commission’s Piedmont fisheries research coordinator: READ MORE
