Hunters should note that beginning this year, the spring gobbler season will open on the third Monday in April and not the fourth, a fundamental season change approved by the Natural Resources Commission last year, according to Keith Krantz, Upland Game and Wild Turkey Biologist for the Division of Natural Resources Wildlife Resources Section (DNR). Hunters may kill one bearded turkey per day and two per season... READ MORE

Wisconsin Whitefish Make Epic Comeback

by TBC Press on 04/04/16

WI-whitefish   Silvery flashes deep beneath Green Bay’s ice signaled that Patrick Durkin (Outdoor Hub) might soon get his first look at a resurrected fish species that walked the plank to regional extinction more than 100 years ago. I figured I had about 25 feet of line between me and the hooked whitefish, and knew better than to relax or force the issue. Whitefish have a soft mouth, so if you give them slack, they quickly shake the hook. And if you pull too hard or reel too fast, you rip out the hook. The best retrieve requires slow reeling and steady pressure... READ MORE

Oregon Shed Hunt Responsibly and Legally

by TBC Press on 04/02/16

shed antler hunting   A few people have already been cited by Oregon State Police for trying to cut antlers off deer and elk skulls they found in the outdoors. Others have wrongly picked up bighorn sheep skulls with horns attached in the Owyhee Unit, where a disease outbreak has left dead scavenged sheep on the landscape.

ODFW and Oregon State Police are reminding shed hunters that they can only pick up naturally shed deer and elk antlers in the wild, not antlers with skulls attached. The skulls and horns of bighorn sheep should be left where they are found, as rules state horns can only be taken during authorized hunting seasons. “If possible, please get a GPS location and take a photo of the dead sheep, then contact your local ODFW office to help wildlife biologists track the disease,” said Phil Milburn, ODFW district wildlife biologist in Ontario... READ MORE

Depredations Lead to Lethal Control for Oregon Wolves in Wallowa County

by TBC Press on 04/02/16

wolves aggression   ODFW has confirmed five livestock depredation incidents on private land within the past three weeks by some wolves in the Imnaha pack, despite continued efforts by ODFW, Wallowa County officials, and area livestock producers to deter wolf-livestock conflict with non-lethal measures.

With the pack now involved in chronic livestock depredation and as part of implementation of Oregon Wolf Conservation and Management Plan provisions, ODFW will lethally remove depredating wolves to reduce the likelihood of further losses. The four wolves of the Imnaha pack associated with recent depredations were shot and killed recently by ODFW staff on private land in Wallowa County... READ MORE
