CPW Acquires Land to Roaring Fork River Property

CPW will also be adding a retaining wall and guardrail along Old Highway 82. Design and engineering of the project will begin soon and construction is anticipated in 2021.

“This purchase again highlights why the requirement for people using SWAs to have a hunting or fishing license is so important,” Yamashita added. “This property acquisition and the improvements are being funded by sportsperson dollars through the Habitat Stamp program. There are no general fund tax dollars used for this kind of work.”

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission established a regulation that began July 1 that requires anyone over the age of 18 to possess a valid hunting or fishing license to access a state wildlife area. While the requirement has met with resistance from non-consumptive users, it has been strongly received by hunting and angling organizations whose members have been carrying the financial burden of outdoor recreation in the state for many years.

The Sam Caudill SWA is located beneath the old Westbank bridge at the intersection of County Road 154 and 109. It is on a narrow strip of land between Highway 82 and the Roaring Fork River. The original parcel of the SWA was acquired by CPW in 2013. It is named for an Aspen-area architect and WWII veteran who was a member of the Colorado Wildlife Commission from 1975 to 1983. Caudill, who passed away in 2007, was a colorful character and well-known outdoorsman in the Roaring Fork Valley.

The recently acquired 1.5-acre parcel was sold to CPW by Richard Neiley and Maria Maniscalchi for the state-appraised value of  $290,000.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife has completed the purchase of a parcel of land along the Roaring Fork River near Carbondale that will allow for the expansion and improvement of river facilities at the Sam Caudill State Wildlife Area.

The 1.5-acre parcel purchased by CPW is immediately adjacent to the popular Sam Caudill SWA on the northeast side of the Roaring Fork River. The boat ramp at the SWA is used extensively by anglers to access the river during the busy summer season. Due to heavy use at the ramp, CPW was looking for an opportunity to improve the ramp and expand parking options at the small property.

“Acquisition of the adjacent property will allow us to improve the existing boat ramp and add some desperately needed parking spaces,” explained Matt Yamashita, Area Wildlife Manager for Glenwood Springs. “We’ll also be able to add fishing access for shoreline anglers.”
