Northern pike and smallmouth bass that aren’t tagged will earn an angler ticket that will provide an entry into a drawing for any unclaimed cash prizes at the end of the tournament, so every pike and smallmouth submitted is a chance to win. Yes, there are tournament rules and you can find them at CPW.state.co.us/tournament.
You must register at the reservoir during the event to be eligible for the cash prizes. There is no tournament entry fee but you will need a valid state parks pass to get into Elkhead Reservoir State Park and you’ll need a valid Colorado fishing license. CPW recommends purchasing a fishing license prior to arriving at Elkhead Reservoir. Fishing license sales are NOT available for purchase at Elkhead Reservoir. Fishing licenses can also be purchased over the phone by calling 1-800-244-5613.
Reminder, camping is by reservation only at Colorado State Parks, including Elkhead Reservoir. All fishing and boating regulations apply.

With almost $10,000 in cash prizes this year, anglers of all ages should begin planning for Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Fifth Annual Elkhead Reservoir Fishing Classic, June 27 through July 5. The week-long fishing tournament at Elkhead Reservoir State Park near Craig offers great fun, great fishing and $9,500 in cash prizes.
At Elkhead Reservoir, anglers can catch and keep all the northern pike and smallmouth bass caught year round, but during the tournament the angler who catches the most northern pike can win $1,500 and the angler who catches the most smallmouth bass can also claim a $1,500 cash prize.
In addition, CPW will be implanting hidden tags in 20 northern pike and 20 smallmouth bass ahead of the tournament, each of those fish is worth $150 if caught and turned in. And if that’s not enough, CPW will pay $50 per northern pike and smallmouth bass for the first 10 tagged fish submitted that are still out there from previous tournaments.
