It isn’t just trout fisheries that are negatively affected by northern pike. If these predatory fish eventually reach federally listed critical habitat in the Colorado River, they would prey upon the state's endangered native fishes - the Colorado pikeminnow, humpback chub, razorback sucker and bonytail.
“The incentive program is a win-win,” Ewert said. “Anglers can make a few bucks while also helping protect several important fisheries - the reservoir fishery, the downstream fisheries, and the endangered fish reaches.”
According to the Upper Colorado River Endangered Fish Recovery Program, the presence of predators like northern pike and smallmouth bass in native fish critical habitat significantly increases the difficulty of delisting the endangered fishes.
To participate in the incentive program, anglers must bring their freshly caught northern pike from Green Mountain or Wolford to the designated marina. For pike caught at Green Mountain, the turn-in location is at Heeney Marina. For northern pike caught at Wolford Mountain, anglers should visit the Wolford Campground and Marina. A valid fishing license and photo ID will be required to claim the incentive payment.
CPW will keep fish heads for analysis, returning the body of the fish to the anglers. Anglers not wishing to keep northern pike can donate their catch to the marinas for later distribution.
Anglers on the West Slope are encouraged to catch and keep as many smallmouth bass and northern pike as they desire, unless special regulations are in effect on specific waters.

Colorado Offers $20 for Northern Pike at Green Mountain, Wolford Reservoirs

Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the Colorado River District are once again providing cash incentives for anglers who target northern pike in Green Mountain and Wolford Mountain Reservoirs. The $20 reward is paid to anglers for each pike they catch and bring to the Heeney Marina (Green Mountain) and Wolford Campground and Marina.
The incentive program has been in place for several years and biologists are hopeful that it is having the desired impact of reducing the numbers of illegally introduced northern pike.
“Pike are voracious predator fish,” explained Jon Ewert, CPW aquatic biologist for the area. “They can decimate the trout fishery and, if they escape through the outlet system, they can significantly impact the Gold Medal waters of the Blue and Colorado Rivers downstream.”
