Washington Spring Black Bear Hunt Applications Due Feb 29

Washington hunters may now purchase and submit applications for a 2016 spring black bear hunting permit, applicable to specific areas of western and eastern Washington.To be eligible for a permit, hunters must purchase and submit an application to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) by midnight Feb. 29.

A drawing will be held in mid-March for 345 permits in western Washington and 509 permits for hunts east of the Cascade Range. Permit winners will receive notification in the mail no later than March 31. Applicants may also check the results of the drawing online at the WDFW website.To apply for a permit, hunters must purchase and submit an application by midnight Feb. 29.  READ MORE

Washington & Oregon Set Spring Chinook & Sturgeon Seasons on the Columbia River

Anticipating a return of 299,200 adult spring chinook salmon, fishery managers from Washington and Oregon today set this year’s initial fishing season to run through April 9 on the lower Columbia River. In addition, representatives from the two states agreed to close the winter sturgeon retention fishery in the Bonneville Pool effective Feb. 8 and approved a six-hour recreational smelt season Feb. 6 on the Cowlitz River.  Here are the major provisions of those agreements:.. READ MORE

Arizona Outdoor Expo April 2-3

The Arizona Game and Fish Department Outdoor Expo, presented by Shikar Safari Club International, will be held Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3, at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix. Arkansas Black Bear Population Steady

Myron Means, large carnivore program coordinator for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, presented the results of the 2015 black bear season during last week’s meeting of the AGFC. According to Means, hunters killed 393 bears during 2015. Hunters harvested 256 male bears and 137 female bears statewide. Archery hunters accounted for 77 percent of the harvest, which is typical of bear hunting in Arkansas. READ MORE

British Columbia Hunting Services Going Online!

   In April 2016, the Province will introduce a new online system that will improve the overall efficiency of hunter services. Initially the online service will be for Limited Entry Hunting (LEH) applications. In the future, the system will integrate a range of online services for hunters, including licensing. Hunters will have 24-hour online access to hunting services from any computer with an internet connection and will be able to view and track their Limited Entry Hunting applications online.  READ MORE

Connecticut Migratory Bird Hunting Season Regulations Meeting April 1

Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) today announced that the Migratory Bird Hunting Regulations Meeting will be held from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2016, in the upstairs conference room at Cabela’s, 475 East Hartford Boulevard North, East Hartford. DEEP is alerting residents to this meeting a few months early because it has been held in previous years in late July/early August. The timing of the meeting has been moved to earlier in the year because the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently implemented a streamlined process for setting annual migratory game bird hunting seasons and bag limits.  READ MORE

Kansas Public Input Needed for State Wildlife Action Plan

The Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism (KDWPT) is seeking public input on Kansas’ State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) through March 11. The action plan replaces the state’s existing Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy and is designed to identify the top priority species and habitats that need conservation efforts in the state. The plan also outlines potential conservation actions that can address the threats or issues these species and habitats face. The SWAP is necessary for Kansas to be eligible for State Wildlife Grants (SWG) and proactively conserve wildlife and habitats before they become rarer and more costly to protect.  READ MORE

Florida Snook Harvest Reopens in Atlantic State Waters Feb 1

The recreational harvest season for snook reopens on Feb. 1 in Florida’s Atlantic coastal and inland waters (from the Miami-Dade/Monroe county line north), including Lake Okeechobee and the Kissimmee River. The season will remain open through May 31.

In the Atlantic, anglers may keep one snook per day that is not less than 28 or more than 32 inches total length, which is measured from the most forward point of the head with the mouth closed to the farthest tip of the tail with the tail compressed or squeezed while the fish is lying on its side. A snook permit is required to keep snook, along with a saltwater fishing license, unless the angler is exempt from the license requirements. Only hook-and-line gear is allowed when targeting or harvesting snook.  READ MORE

Missouri Proposes Banning Hog Hunting on Conservation Areas

   At its meeting on Jan. 22, the Missouri Conservation Commission voiced initial approval for recommended changes to the Wildlife Code of Missouri that would prohibit the hunting of feral hogs on lands owned, leased, or managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC). California Public Meeting on Proposed Closure of Part of Sacramento River

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is holding a public meeting to solicit comments on a proposed emergency fishing closure of 5.5 miles of the Sacramento River above the Highway 44 Bridge in Redding to the Keswick Dam. CDFW has determined this closure is necessary to protect endangered winter-run Chinook salmon. The anticipated dates of closure are April 1 through July 31.
