Hunters reported harvesting 13,514 deer on the opening weekend of the 2017 Maryland firearm season, the state’s most popular hunting season. The total includes 6,242 antlered and 7,272 antlerless deer, with sika deer comprising 201 of the antlered and 188 of the antlerless totals. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is proposing a special two-month mule deer hunt in south central Montana near where two bucks – which later tested positive for chronic wasting disease, or CWD – were killed earlier this fall. The Department of Environmental Management's Division of Fish and Wildlife will be stocking trout in Stafford Pond, Tiverton on Tuesday, November 28. A cyanobacteria or blue-green algae infestation prevented the department from stocking trout earlier this fall. This year over 300 South Carolina observers recorded 1866 unique observations, seeing over 10,000 turkeys across the state in July and August. This was the best participation in the survey in ten years. More observations lead to higher quality data and better confidence in the information collected.   West Virginia’s 2017 muzzleloader deer season opens Dec. 4 and will offer hunters the unique challenge of using firearm technology from the 18th and 19th centuries.
