Maryland Hunters Harvest 34,000 Deer during 2017 Firearm Season

Maryland hunters reported taking 34,412 deer during the state’s most popular hunt, the two-week firearm season. The total was similar to last year’s official harvest of 35,002. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources reported that more than 4,000 deer were taken on the two Sundays during the season, more than 10 percent of the total take during the two week season. Pennsylvania Preliminary 2017 Statewide Bear Harvest Results  Hunters during the final day of Pennsylvania’s statewide bear season harvested 168 bears, raising the 2017 statewide season harvest to 1,796 – an about 30 percent decrease compared to the 2,579 bears taken during the four days of the statewide season in 2016. A strange beginning to the winter season has officials urging both waterfowl hunters and ice anglers to use caution when venturing out to hunt and fish. Even with this last blast of cold weather, there is still plenty of open water for duck hunting, said Joe Keeton, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks (GFP) boating safety officer. WDFW Plans First Razor Clam Digs of 2018 - Starting New Year's Day

Washington State shellfish managers have proposed the first round of razor clam digs in 2018, starting with the addition of New Year's Day on two beaches followed by a weeklong dig extending from late January into early February. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) will confirm that schedule prior to each dig, provided that upcoming marine toxin tests show the clams are safe to eat. Under WDFW's plan, Twin Harbors and Mocrocks beaches will open for digging at noon Jan. 1, extending a dig previously scheduled for New Year's Eve dig at four ocean beaches. California Delays Commercial Dungeness Crab Season Opener to Dec 31  The director of the California (CDFW) has announced an additional 15-day delay for the upcoming commercial Dungeness crab season, based on the results of another round of pre-season quality testing conducted on Dec. 5. The tests continued to show that Dungeness crab are not yet ready for harvesting. The delay affects Fish and Game Districts 6, 7, 8 and 9 (Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties). Louisiana 2018 Turkey Season Lottery Hunt Applications Now Available  The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is accepting applications for the 2018 turkey season lottery hunts on state wildlife management areas (WMAs).
