Florida Neighborhoods May Harbor Deadly Disease-Carrying Monkeys

Feral rhesus macaque monkeys that had been confined to Florida's Silver Springs State Park have been spotted recently in neighborhoods in Jacksonville, St. Johns, St. Augustine, Palatka, Welaka and Elkton. In all, a dozen confirmed sightings of feral, invasive monkeys. A significant proportion of the troop carries herpes B virus, which can be fatal to people, and FWC Commission officials say people should avoid contact with the monkeys.
