The Michigan DNR reminds anglers that mandatory ice shanty removal dates are approaching. Regardless of the date, shanties must be removed as soon as the ice is unable to safely support them. It appears that the 31st rendition of the New York State Crappie Derby will go off as scheduled on Saturday Feb 17 at the Whitney Point Reservoir. New York to Consider Lowering Hunting Age

Back in 1991 New York was dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 20th Century when the legislature approved lowering the minimum small game hunting age from 14 to 12. We were the last of the 50 states to do so. Today 12 is the highest minimum hunting age in the country — again. The Empire State has new legislation that proposes lowering the big game hunting age to 12. Senate Bill 3156, sponsored by Sen. Joseph A. Griffo (R-Rome), would do that. Each winter, aerial survey teams of biologists from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service make visual estimates of ducks, geese and swans along the state’s coast and shoreline.
