Landowners & tenants
Up to 20 percent of the permits for each permit area will be issued to applicants who are landowners and tenants of 40 acres or more of prairie or grassland within the permit area for which they have applied. Immediate family members of a landowner or tenant are eligible. View the details in the how-to-apply section.

Applications for the fall hunt are open through Friday, Aug. 20. for one of 125 permits available for the 2021 Minnesota prairie chicken hunting season. You can apply as an individual, part of a group or a landowner/tenant. Cost to apply is $4 and can be done online, via phone at 888-665-4236 or at any license agent.

The nine-day prairie chicken season begins Saturday, Sept. 25, and is open only to Minnesota residents. The hunt takes place in northwestern Minnesota between St. Hilaire in the north and Breckenridge in the south. 

Residents only
A hunter 21 or older must have been a Minnesota resident for at least sixty 60 days. Valid forms of identification are a valid Minnesota driver’s license or a state ID card issued by the Department of Public Safety.
