Maryland Survey Shows Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Population Healthy

The Maryland DNR released the results of the 2018 Blue Crab Winter Dredge Survey, which shows that the population of blue crabs remains healthy and sustainable. While this year’s cold weather and ice cover took a toll on the adult crab population, causing an estimated 35 percent mortality of adult females wintering in state waters, the number of young crabs that returned to Chesapeake Bay this year increased 34 percent. Mississippi 2018 spring squirrel hunting season opens May 15 and runs through June 1st. The daily bag limit is 4 squirrels (regardless of species). Missouri Bow Fisherman Stuck Record Yellow Bullhead  The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports Michael Williams of Wappapello became the most recent record-breaking angler in Missouri when he stuck a yellow bullhead on Duck Creek in Bollinger County. Tennessee’s 2018 spring hunting season for gray, fox and red squirrels opens Saturday, May 12 and will continue through Sunday, June 10. Vermont is recommending an antlerless deer harvest this year that is very similar to what was recommended in 2017, said Nick Fortin, deer project leader for the Fish & Wildlife Department. The recommendation is intended to reduce deer numbers in those areas while stabilizing populations in other areas. Washington Dungeness Crab Season to Remain Closed in Portions of South Puget Sound   The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) recently announced that two marine areas in south Puget Sound will not open for crab fishing this summer to allow Dungeness crab populations to rebuild. Washington Boaters asked to Observe 'No-Go' Zone Along Western San Juan Island  Washington fish and wildlife managers are asking anglers and other boaters to avoid an area along the west side of San Juan Island in an effort to protect a dwindling population of southern resident killer whales.
